McAfee Mobile Firewall

McAfee Firewall Mobile software provides security for your mobile device. It protects your device from external threats (such as hackers) and internal threats (such as some viruses and worms). Firewall Mobile acts as a filter between your device and the network or Internet. The firewall can scan all traffic arriving at your device (incoming traffic) and all traffic sent by your device (outgoing traffic). It scans traffic at the packet level. As it reviews each arriving or departing packet, the firewall checks its list of rules. A rule is a set of criteria with an associated action. If a packet matches the criteria in a rule, the firewall performs the action specified by the rule — either allowing the packet through the firewall, or blocking it.

Firewall Mobile secures your device using:

• A firewall that inspects incoming and outgoing network traffic, and either blocks or allows packets based on the security level being used.

• An activity log that records information about Firewall Mobile actions. You can use this log to review past activities or troubleshoot problems.

Firewall Mobile records every event in its activity log. The log provides specific details about blocked packets, including the network type and protocol, the IP address, and the port.

Designed for the mobile world, Firewall Mobile is small yet powerful, as well
as easy to download and install.

Uninterrupted service
Until it detects a threat, Firewall Mobile is designed to run silently on your device during mobile activities such as phone calls, data access, or Web surfing.

Using Firewall Mobile

With Firewall Mobile, you can protect your device from both internal and external threats by blocking packets that are not compliant with one of the three security levels. Firewall Mobile’s log allows you to get information about packets that have been blocked, and troubleshoot problems.

A user can:

• Enable and disable the firewall

• Set the security level to enforce

• Enable and disable the Firewall Mobile log

• View details about blocked packets

• Receive notifications when packets are blocked

All operations are accessed from the Firewall Mobile main screen.

Starting Firewall Mobile

If you did not start Firewall Mobile at completion of the installation, go to the device’s Main menu and click the McAfee Firewall Mobile icon.

The Firewall Mobile main screen appears. By default, the firewall is enabled.

From the Firewall Mobile main screen you can:

• View Firewall Mobile status (On or Off)
• View the data and time of the last packet blocked
• View the number of events blocked since the last reset
• View the current firewall policy setting (Low, Medium, High)

From the main screen’s Options menu (click More), you can:

• View and clear the log file
• Configure firewall and log file option settings
• View Firewall Mobile product information

Firewall security levels
Firewall Mobile includes policies for low, medium, and high security uses. The default policy is the medium security rule. The firewall policy descriptions are:

• Low security — permits all local traffic, all inbound and outbound connections, outbound ICMP echo requests, and inbound Echo Reply and Packet
• Too Big messages. Everything else is blocked.
• Medium security — permits everything Low security allows except inbound connections.
• High security — permits all local traffic, outbound ICMP echo requests, inbound Echo Reply and Packet Too Big messages, and outbound connections to FTP(20, 21), DNS(53), IMAP3(220), IMAP4(143, 993), SMTP(25), POP3(110), HTTPS(443), HTTP(80), and Telnet(21)
